I Asked an AI to Teach Me Thermodynamics. It Built Me an Entire Classroom.
Most online courses fail for a simple reason.
They’re designed for one type of learner, at one pace, at one level. If you don’t fit that profile, you’re going to struggle. Not because you’re a bad learner. Because the course was never built for you.
I’ve believed this for years. Learning is personal. Your starting point, your schedule, your preferred style, they’re all different from the person sitting next to you (or in the next Zoom window).
That’s why I got excited when I stumbled on OpenMAIC last week. It’s not perfect. But it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to learning that actually adapts to you from the first second.
Let me show you what it does.
Why Most Learning Tools Miss the Mark
Think about how most courses work. A teacher records a video. You watch it. Maybe there’s a quiz at the end. If you’re confused, you rewatch or Google your question elsewhere.
There’s no professor to ask. No classmates to discuss with. No one to tell you “hey, you already know the first three modules, skip ahead.”
Even live cohort courses have this problem. The pace is set for the group, not for you.
AI tools like ChatGPT improved this a little. You can ask questions and get explanations on demand. But it’s still a text conversation. There’s no structure, no lesson flow, no feeling of being in an actual learning environment.
OpenMAIC does something different.
What OpenMAIC Actually Is
OpenMAIC stands for Open Multi-Agent Interactive Classroom. It was built by researchers at Tsinghua University and released as open-source software.
The idea is straightforward. You type a topic, click a button, and the platform builds you a full classroom on the spot!
With a professor. A teaching assistant. Two AI classmates with different personalities and knowledge levels. A live whiteboard. Voice narration. Interactive slides. Quizzes.
All generated in seconds, all tailored to what you told it about yourself.
You want to learn Python as a complete beginner with only 90 minutes? Tell it that. You want to study thermodynamics but already understand basic physics? Tell it that too. The more context you give, the more the classroom matches where you actually are.
What the Experience Looks Like
I ran a quick demo. I typed in that I wanted to learn thermodynamics as a total beginner and hit “Enter Classroom.”
Here’s what happened.
The platform created four classroom roles.
Prof. Maxwell as the teacher.
Sunny as the teaching assistant.
Leo and Maya as two student peers, each with different characteristics.
Then the lesson started.
Prof. Maxwell opened with an introduction, used a laser pointer on the slides, and the screen grayed out around wherever he was pointing to focus your attention. It felt like a real lecture, not a slideshow with audio attached.
The classroom has a chat mode. I typed a question about energy and Prof. Maxwell replied directly. A few moments later, one of the AI classmates, Leo, jumped in with a follow-up comment. It created a back-and-forth that felt closer to a real class discussion than anything I’ve experienced in self-paced online learning.
That’s the part that surprised me most. The classmates aren’t decorative. They participate. They ask questions. They create the social texture of learning that solo learners almost never get.
Four Ways Solopreneurs Can Use This
You’re probably not trying to ace a thermodynamics exam. But there are a lot of topics on a solopreneur’s learning list at any given time.
Here’s where OpenMAIC makes sense for how we work:
Learn a new skill fast. Need to get up to speed on email marketing, financial modeling, or a new coding language? Set your level, set your time constraint, and let the platform build the lesson. You skip the fluff and go straight to what’s relevant.
Turn a document into a training module. OpenMAIC lets you upload a PDF and it builds a classroom from that. If you’ve got a dense report, a legal document, or a course you’re trying to absorb, this speeds up the process.
Understand tools before you buy them. Before investing in a new system or software stack, use OpenMAIC to get a proper grounded understanding of how it works. Better than reading docs. Better than watching a 2-hour YouTube tutorial at 1.5x speed.
Build training for your own community. If you run a community or teach clients, you can prototype interactive lessons here before building anything official. Field test your curriculum structure for free.
What’s Free and What’s Not
Right now, OpenMAIC lets you create 10 lessons a day at no cost. That’s generous for a tool at this stage.
It’s open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license. You can self-host it if you want full control. It supports major LLM providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek.
For most solopreneurs, the free tier is more than enough to experiment and get real value.
You can try the live demo at open.maic.chat. The GitHub repo is at github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC.
What I’m Watching For
OpenMAIC is early. The tech works but there will be rough edges.
What I want to see next is deeper knowledge density. Right now it does a solid job of introductory and intermediate content. The real test is whether it holds up on complex, nuanced topics where the quality of explanation matters a lot.
I also want to see better memory across sessions. Right now each classroom is a fresh start. If it builds a learning path that continues across days, it becomes something much more serious.
Still, for a free, open-source tool from a university research team, it’s already ahead of most paid learning platforms in terms of the actual experience.
Try This Today
Pick one topic you’ve been putting off learning. Open open.maic.chat. Tell it your level and how much time you have.
Then tell me in the comments: what topic did you use, and how was the experience?
I’m genuinely curious whether this holds up across different subjects and different types of learners.
Let’s crowdsource the results.
You’re doing everything. But nothing is moving?
You are doing everything. But nothing is moving.
That is not a motivation problem.
Most solopreneurs are learning from everywhere and getting nowhere. Too much information. No clear system connecting effort to results.
You have everything it takes. You just do not have a clear system yet.
That is what paid subscribers get. Every system, playbook, prompt, and template. All inside the Premium Vault.
All for $79/year. That’s $6.58/month.
