Function calling and tool use. It can interact with other software, not just answer questions.
Up to 256,000 token context window. On the bigger models, you can feed it an entire book.
Strong performance. On the Arena AI leaderboard, the 31 billion parameter model ranks #3 among all open models. The 26 billion version is #6. Some of these beat models 20 times their size.

This isn’t just another open model. Over 400 million Gemma downloads have happened since the first generation launched, with more than 100,000 community variants built on top of it.

The Four Model Sizes: Which One is Right for You?

Gemma 4 comes in four sizes.

Each one is designed for different hardware and use cases.

My Recommendation

The 26B MoE model is the sweet spot.

It uses a “Mixture of Experts” architecture where only about 4 billion parameters are active at any given time.

You get the intelligence of a 26 billion parameter model with the speed and memory requirements of a much smaller one.

This is the one most solopreneurs should start with.

For mobile, you can go for E2B, which is the best overall. More on that later.

All four models support text and image input. The edge models (E2B and E4B) also support audio.

How to Set It Up on Your Mac or PC (Step by Step)

You don’t need to code. You don’t need a terminal.

The whole process takes about 10-15 minutes, plus download time for the model file.

Step 1: Download LM Studio

LM Studio is a free desktop app that lets you download and run AI models locally. It looks and feels like ChatGPT or any major LLMs.

Available for macOS (including Apple Silicon), Windows, and Linux.

Go to lmstudio.ai and download the app for your operating system.

Step 2: Search for Gemma 4

Open LM Studio.

Use the search bar to find “Gemma 4.” You’ll see various versions and quantizations (compressed versions that use less memory).

Step 3: Download the 26B Model

Select the 26B version.

The download is about 18GB, so it will take a while depending on your internet speed. This is a one-time download.

Hardware check: You’ll want at least 16GB of RAM. 32GB is recommended for smooth performance with the 26B model. If you have less than 16GB, try the E4B model instead.

Step 4: Start Chatting

Once the download finishes, open a new chat window.

Pick the 26B model from the dropdown.

Start typing.

That’s it. You’re now running a powerful AI model locally. No internet required. No token limits. No usage meter. It’s your model.

Step 5 (Optional): Add a Custom System Prompt

This is where it gets powerful for solopreneurs.

You can give Gemma 4 a detailed system prompt that describes your writing style, your brand voice, your formatting preferences, or any specific instructions.

Because there’s no token limit, your system prompt doesn’t eat into response quality. When the model is yours, you shape it into exactly what you need.

Download Google’s AI Edge Gallery app (available for Android and iOS)
Download the smaller E2B model (phone hardware can’t handle the larger 26B model)
Wait for the download to complete

Test It

Turn on flight mode. No Wi-Fi. No cellular. Nothing.

Ask it to draft an email, brainstorm ideas, translate text, or summarize a document. It works. On-device, no shared data, and often faster than ChatGPT on slow internet.

Let’s be direct.

Gemma 4 is not a drop-in replacement for ChatGPT or Claude. But for many solopreneur tasks, it’s more than capable.

For me, it’s good for me to do all the ground works. And refine in Claude or Notion AI.
