This post is linked to the recent Substack Live I did with Veronica Llorca-Smith titled “How Veronica Llorca-Smith and I Built Our Digital Businesses on Gumroad”
There’s a lot of valuable information between both pieces.
Take the time to go through them, and reach out if you have any questions.
In this post, I’ll break down the 5 stages of customer awareness (from "Unaware" to "Most Aware") and explain exactly how Gumroad creators can align their lead magnets and email sequences to each stage.
Inside, you’ll learn:
What each awareness stage looks like in the Gumroad world
The best type of lead magnet to use at each stage
The specific email sequences that nurture, educate, and convert
The goal?
To help creators like yourself stop sending generic content and start converting more subscribers into customers strategically and authentically.
Do you send the same email to all your customers on your Gumroad list?
Do you send any email to your customers on your Gumroad list?
That’s like offering a full-course meal to someone who just wanted coffee (i.e. the free lead magnet that you offer).
Welcome to the world of customer awareness, where timing and message alignment can make or break your conversions.
Whether you're just starting on Gumroad or you're a seasoned creator with a full library of digital products, understanding where your customer is on their awareness journey is the secret sauce to selling more (without being pushy).
In this post, we’ll break down the 5 stages of customer awareness from completely clueless strangers to raving fan and show you:
What kind of lead magnets attract the right people at each stage
What email sequences move them closer to a sale
How to map your funnel based on actual customer behavior
Ready to sell smarter?
Let’s dig in.
Quick Summary of the 5 Stages of Customer Awareness
Unaware
People who don’t realize they have a problem yet.
They’re passive lurkers, scrolling on social media, not actively searching for solutions.
Your job is to spark curiosity and build initial trust.
Problem Aware
They know something’s wrong, but they can’t fully define or solve it.
They’re looking for answers, guidance, and clarity.
Your role is to empathize, agitate the pain point, and show what’s at stake.
Solution Aware
They understand that solutions exist, but they haven’t picked one yet.
They’re comparing methods, tools, and experts.
This is where you position your approach as the best fit.
Product Aware
They already know your product but haven’t pulled the trigger.
Hesitation usually comes from fear, doubt, or indecision.
Your task here is to remove objections, highlight proof, and add urgency.
Most Aware
These are your loyal fans and repeat customers.
They already trust you and don’t need convincing.
Instead of selling, focus on delighting them with upsells, exclusives, and long-term value.
Stage 1: Unaware
Who Are They:
These are the people who don’t even realize they have a problem or that your product is even relevant to them.
They’re not searching for a solution yet because the pain point isn’t top-of-mind or it’s not being surfaced to them.
Think of them as folks browsing aimlessly on TikTok, X, Threads, or YouTube Shorts.
They might stumble upon your content but have no context for how it helps them yet.
In the Gumroad Context:
Cold social traffic
Readers of a trending blog post
Passive newsletter subscribers who haven’t clicked anything
Folks who follow you but don’t engage
They’ve shown some interest, but not enough to self-identify as someone who needs help.
Lead Magnet Examples:
Keep it broad, light, and curiosity-piquing.
You’re not solving a big problem here.
You’re just inviting them to go deeper.
Examples:
“10 Creative Prompts to Beat Writer’s Block”
“5 Mistakes Every New Digital Creator Makes”
“Checklist: Tools Every Freelancer Should Have”
Email Sequence Examples:
Story-based nurture:
Use personal stories and “aha” moments to gently introduce common struggles.
The keyword is “nurture“.
Relatable content:
Focus on connection and subtly make your readers feel like they’re being heard.
Try “I used to think X until I realized Y.”
“I understand because I’ve been there…”
Soft CTAs:
Invite them to follow you
Get them to explore and download your free resources, or
Invite them to join a free community.
Goal: Move them from Unaware → Problem Aware by helping them recognize a gap in their process, mindset, or results.
Stage 2: Problem Aware
Who Are They:
Now they know something’s not right.
But they’re overwhelmed, confused, or unsure where to begin.
They’ve started Googling.
Maybe they’ve downloaded some freebies or followed a few experts.
They feel the pain but haven’t picked a direction yet.
They’re asking questions like:
“Why isn’t my course selling?”
“How do I grow my email list?”
“Why am I stuck at 300 followers?”
In the Gumroad Context:
Subscribers who downloaded your freebie and opened the first few emails
Blog readers who visit problem-oriented posts (e.g. “Why Selling Information in 2025 is “Dead” (and What to Do Instead)”)
Webinar attendees who stick around but don’t take action
Lead Magnet Examples:
Offer something that addresses the problem head-on.
Perhaps a tangible resource that gives them clarity.
Examples:
“Fix Your First Digital Product in 3 Days” (mini-course)
“Pricing Cheat Sheet for Solopreneurs”
“30-Day Email List Growth Plan”
Email Sequence Examples:
Agitate the problem:
Help them feel the cost of inaction (time, energy, lost sales).
Actionable tips:
Share easy wins that build momentum.
Low-barrier offers:
Pitch affordable templates, guides, or checklists that solve one specific pain point.
This is highly effective. The aim is not to earn from this, but to ensure your target audience take action, particularly take action with your help.
Goal: Move them from Problem Aware → Solution Aware by showing that the problem is solvable and that you’re someone who can help.
Stage 3: Solution Aware
Who Are They:
These folks are already exploring possible solutions, but they’re still shopping around.
They might know that they need a Notion template, an email course, or a Gumroad sales system but they’re unsure which one to choose or who to trust.
They’re reading reviews, comparing approaches, and looking for proof that something actually works.
In the Gumroad Context:
Subscribers who click on product-related emails but haven’t purchased
Followers who ask “Which course would you recommend for XYZ?”
People who show buying intent but not brand loyalty (yet)
Lead Magnet/ Product Examples:
Shift to positioning-based content.
Show how your method or product stands out.
Examples:
“Gumroad vs. Podia: Which One Is Right for You?” (comparison guide)
“My Product Launch Toolkit” (featuring your paid resources)
Free module, workbook, or preview of your paid product
Email Sequence Examples:
Authority building:
Why your method works,
Why your philosophy works, and
What makes it different.
Proof and testimonials:
Showcase successful students/ customers or
Before-and-after results.
Mid-tier CTAs:
Introduce signature products, bundles, or detailed landing pages.
Goal: Move them from Solution Aware → Product Aware by establishing trust and clearly showing how your offer is the right one for them.
Stage 4: Product Aware
Who Are They:
They now know about your product.
They’ve seen the sales page.
Maybe even added it to cart.
But something’s stopping them, usually fear, friction, or indecision.
These are high-intent prospects who just need a final nudge.
In the Gumroad Context:
Clicked your “Buy Now” button multiple times
Revisited the same landing page
Engaged on launch emails but didn’t convert
Bought a smaller product but not your flagship offer
Ask you questions about the product
Product Examples:
Skip all the BS and focus on conversion-focused assets.
Examples:
“Buy Now and Get This Bonus”
Time-limited discounts
Demo or preview walkthrough
FAQs download or comparison chart
A checklist of what they’ll get if they buy now
Email Sequence Examples:
Objection handling:
Address fears like
“Is this really for me?”,
“What if it doesn’t work?”, or
“Is it worth the price?”
Urgency & scarcity:
Limited bonuses,
Countdowns, or
Scarcity-based campaigns.
Strong CTA:
Clear, direct, and frequent calls to action to buy now.
Goal: Convert! That’s it. Use urgency, trust, and clarity to help them decide confidently.
Stage 5: Most Aware
Who Are They:
These are your people, your superfans.
They’ve already bought something, gotten results, and trust you.
They don’t need convincing, they need direction on what to do next.
They’re the folks who reply to your emails, refer others, or buy every time you launch something.
In the Gumroad Context:
Repeat buyers
Email replies like “This was so helpful!”
Followers who engage on every post
Gumroad customers who bought bundles or upgrades
Product Examples:
None needed.
Now it's all about relationship and reward.
Examples:
Early access to new offers
Exclusive content (only for customers)
Invite to VIP newsletter or private group
Email Sequence Examples:
Customer retention content:
Updates, product walkthroughs, advanced tips
Cross-sells & upsells:
Recommend relevant products they haven’t seen
Behind-the-scenes:
Let them into your process, thinking, or creation journey
Goal: Increase lifetime value. Keep them excited, supported, and loyal.
Putting It All Together: Your Awareness Funnel Map
Let’s zoom out and visualize your email + lead magnet journey:
Think of this as stacked layers, not a straight line. People move back and forth.
Your job is to meet them where they are.
Key Takeaways
One-size-fits-all emails don’t work anymore.
Your subscribers are in different stages of awareness, and they need different messages.
By aligning your lead magnets and email sequences with each stage, you increase trust, engagement, and sales.
Gumroad creators who understand this framework build better funnels and stronger communities.
